Blog

A new beginning

2015 marks eight years of my previous blog, For Me, For You. It went through so many changes in those years: from a blog two best friends shared on opposite coasts, to something I grew alone into a space that defined so much of my life and opened so many doors for me, then I slowly backed off until it felt too unnatural to post anything. Before FMFY, I had a Livejournal, before that some other early forms of blogging. I've been blogging in some form or another since I was about 17 years old: that's a long time, and I have no intention of no longer sharing myself online. The blog world has changed significantly, and sometimes it feels like talking into an empty, pointless void. But I've decided to experiment with worrying less about who's reading and how often I'm here and just...go for it. At first I thought I'd ditch all of this for just a music blog, but that started to feel not quite right.

I recently read a really interesting interview with Jesse Kamm. I will start by saying that I have a weird chip on my shoulder towards some successful women in LA that live a lifestyle I'm deeply jealous of on a surface level, and sometimes it's really hard for me to look into their lives. But the interview was incredibly inspiring and I respect her so highly now. She said something that rang inside my head so loudly: "I honor my limits". I wrote down "honor your limits" and put it on a piece of paper I carry around with me now. It's so simple and applies to many different aspects of our lives, but for me I applied it to my professional life and my online life. I read these guides on how to grow your business and how to be great at social media and sometimes I want to throw my computer against a wall because I just can't do it all. Recently I did an experiment and for two weeks I posted on Instagram every single day. I gained 50 followers in those two weeks, a pretty decent bump for me: I could see the difference it made immediately. But it was really stressful and sometimes I posted sub-par material I wasn't jazzed about and got incredibly depressed when some photos didn't get many likes. I knew that method wasn't for me and I felt almost untrue to myself having such a plan in place. I stopped, assessed my limits, and honored them. I decided to just attempt to post more simply for creatively pushing myself, and if it happened to help my business, that would be a nice.

The past year at my job has been a huge learning lesson. When I decided to start freelancing a bit again, it wasn't because I wasn't enjoying my job, it was because I was so inspired to start doing my own thing again with everything I've learned. I missed working on certain projects we don't do at KK and I knew I'd let certain parts of my creative life really go to the wayside because they just had to or I'd implode. But getting back in the game has been really hard and I'm hoping to use this space to get back into making things. I want to share what I'm working on, share music again, and whatever the heck else I'm feeling the need to bring here. You can also always follow me on Instagram for snapshots, Pinterest for inspiration, and Twitter for self depreciating remarks and light hearted whining (and the occasional photo Instagram wants nothing to do with - an entire rant of its own someday.)

Thanks for sticking with me, or just joining in. This blog lives inside my brand new portfolio site - feel free to take a spin around and let me know if you have any projects up your sleeve we could work on together!
